When Do You Need It?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>If you\u2019ve only owned your\ndomain or website for a short amount of time, you might not be familiar with\nwhat a subdomain is and its use when it comes to organizing. You\u2019re probably\nmore familiar with the more traditional way of organizing websites, which is\nthrough subdirectories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While sub directories can certainly be useful, they don\u2019t offer you the same amount of freedom and flexibility as a subdomain does. You can even set up a whole different website under your domain and have each one serves varying purposes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>What Is A Subdomain? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, a subdomain is\nanything that goes before your main URL and domain name. Let\u2019s say your URL is\nexample.com. Well, if you added \u2018blog\u2019 in front, making it blog.example.com, then\nthe blog is the subdomain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can get a little confusing if you aren\u2019t familiar with how URLs work. You see, the \u2018.com\u2019 portion of the URL is what\u2019s called a&nbsp;Top-Level-Domain or TLD, and the \u2018example\u2019 part is the Second-Level-Domain or SLD. As such, a subdomain is a sub-section of the SLD, which is the domain you purchase from a domain registrar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"570\" height=\"230\" src=\"https:\/\/www.infoskysolutions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/domain-reseller.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.infoskysolutions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/domain-reseller.jpg 570w, https:\/\/www.infoskysolutions.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/domain-reseller-300x121.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 570px) 100vw, 570px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This can get a little confusing if you aren\u2019t familiar with how URLs work. You see, the \u2018.com\u2019 portion of the URL is what\u2019s called a&nbsp;Top-Level-Domain or TLD, and the \u2018example\u2019 part is the Second-Level-Domain or SLD. As such, a subdomain is a sub-section of the SLD, which is the domain you purchase from a domain registrar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Subdomain Vs. Sub directory <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, subdirectories put that extra bit at the\u00a0end\u00a0of the URL instead of the start. Using the above URL example, a subdirectory would look like example.com\/blog with that blog at the end being a subdirectory.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to think of it is that the&nbsp;<strong>subdirectory<\/strong>&nbsp;is like a folder inside your hard drive, while a&nbsp;<strong>subdomain<\/strong>&nbsp;is another hard drive in your computer, with your computer itself being your domain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><strong>Impact Of Subdomain On SEO <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Google,\nsubdomains are treated the same as subdirectories. That means that if Site A\nuses subdomains and Site B uses subdirectories, they both would rank the same\nfor keywords assuming they had identical content, right? Well, not so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As it turns out, Google treats subdomains as different and apart from the root domain or SLD. So, if you are trying to rank for a specific keyword but spread that keyword across an SLD and subdomain, you dilute that keyword. Therefore, using a subdomain is actually\u00a0bad\u00a0for SEO.
