An S-M-S gateway allows a computer to send or receive Short Message Service (S-M-S) transmissions to or from a telecommunications network. Most of the messages are finally scattered into the mobile phone networks. Many bulk SMS provider gateways support media conversion from email and other formats.
Gateway types
Several mobile telephone network operators have true fixed-wire S-M-S services. These depends on addendum to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (E-T-S-I) Global System for Mobile Communications (G-S-M) S-M-S standards and allow messaging between any mix of fixed and mobile equipment. Regulation
G-S-M gateway equipment is covered by the Wireless Telegraphy Act in the UK and can legally be used by any business to transmit S-M-S to their own customers when using their own gateway equipment. In India it is controlled by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( i.e. T-R-A-I).
